A geothermal heat pump can move on average 3 to 4 times more heat to or from a structure than the energy required to operate it.

The energy efficiency of heating equipment is compared by looking at the rated Coefficient of Performance or COP of the unit. COP is the ratio of energy output to energy input thus a higher COP rating indicates a more energy efficient unit.

An electric furnace has a COP equal to 1. Each watt of electricity put into it produces the equivalent of 1 watt of heat energy out. The COP of a Geothermal System is 3 to 5. Each watt the geothermal heat pump uses allows it to draw 2 to 4 from the earth thus giving more than 3 units out for every 1 unit put in.
